This bespoke development for Autism West Midlands consisted of 8 independent living apartments for adults with autistic spectrum disorder. The building also included communal areas, an office and snoezlen. The apartments provide lifetime homes with security of tenure. Zebra were involved in the feasibility, planning, appeal and technical package for the scheme.
The site is located in open countryside within the greenbelt and therefore the argument made at appeal with RCA Regeneration as planning consultants was that this development amounted to very special circumstances necessary to justify the approval.
The project necessitated the need for particular design solutions which involved the lead architect observing the client behaviour in a similar setting, which resulted in a building which has been deemed a huge success.
